Seattle-based hard rock band Underride have a sound that’s all their own, and vocalist Rev recently said in an interview this past December, “Our music is something new, fun and it’s not depressing. It’s an anti-Seattle sound.” The band is currently on a U.S. tour with Rains. In a recent in-person interview, drummer Jeremy Schulz talked about his start in music as well as something that he has created that just might change the world of music merchandise.
Schulz is a new member of Underride (hired this past November), and brings something great to the band with his talent. His earliest musical influence is Black Sabbath, and when he was 11 years old, he heard Motley Crue. From the moment he heard Tommy Lee, he wanted to play the drums. “When Motley Crue came out, there was no one else like them…you had Shout at the Devil and Too Fast For Love…I loved Judas Priest, Iron Maiden – I was a huge Maiden fan growing up and I just couldn’t get enough, and of course, Dio,” he said. Schulz was fortunate enough to meet Dio before his passing, which has been one of his most memorable moments to date.
Schulz has invented a T-shirt that could easily change the way merchandise is sold. His company is R-Evolution Tees and his invention is the Downloadable Album Tee. Instead of having the high cost of pressing CD’s, bands are able to have a download code to use on the company’s website and a QR code that can be scanned by a smartphone to download the album. Essentially, it’s a T-shirt and album all in one. Underride began selling these in February and the T-shirts have been a big hit with fans on the road. The music can be heard instantly, it can only be downloaded one time, and the codes expire.
Schulz told me that the band has been working on new music, and is planning on having a new album finished by the end of the year and has more tours lined up throughout the rest of the year. Underride has supported acts such as Tantric, Cavo, 30 Seconds to Mars, Saliva, Static X and more.
Their fan base has grown largely by word of mouth. They started with a strong following in the Pacific Northwest garnered from their dynamic live shows and regional events, receiving airplay and concert promotion from Seattle’s KISW 99.9 FM. The album, Distorted Nations is a must have for any rock fan. There are several standout songs including Blinded By You, Inside Out, and the band’s remake of Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi.
