If you are a metal band and you want to shoot a concert DVD, you might want to head to South America. It is fairly well known that South American fans love the metal and will make for an amazing audience for your show. Anthrax clearly knew this when they headed to the Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile on May 10, 2013 to film their Chile on Hell DVD/ Blu-Ray , released September 16, 2014. This was an audience that not only sang along with each and every word, but also sang along with their favorite guitar parts.
Of course all the fan-favorites were featured, such as I am the Law,Caught in a Mosh, and Madhouse. The boys also threw in a cover from their Anthems EP, AC/DC’s TNT, and a few from Worship Music, including a touching tribute to Ronnie James Dio and Dimebag Darrell, In the End.
In addition to the traditional camera angles, there was also a mounted camera on Charlie Benante’s drums and an additional one alternating between the end of Scott Ian’s guitar and Frank Bello’s bass. The light show is impressive but not extravagant and there are plenty of crowd shots, including the almost constantly circling pit.
Interspersed on the DVD are clips from the period leading up to the filming of the show. During the previous three years, Anthrax had reached several new high points in their career with the release of Worship Music and the Anthems EP: the return of vocalist Joey Belladonna, the Big Four shows (Anthrax, Slayer, Metallica, and Megadeth), two Grammy nominations, and “Anthrax Day” being declared in the Bronx.
The show is pure Anthrax from beginning to end, not too much talking in between songs, just unadulterated thrash. Now make sure not to turn off the DVD before letting the credits roll, because there are few random backstage “outtakes” hidden at the end. So be prepared to mosh a little in your living room, or at least bang your head.
