The Pretty Reckless is having a great year topping the charts with their new single Take Me Down from the band’s third studio album Who You Selling For. Earlier this week they were guests with Steve Jones on Jonesy’s Jukebox (local radio station KLOS) where they joked around with the ex-Sex Pistol’s guitarist and performed live on air promoting their upcoming show at The Mayan in Los Angeles.
Fronted by singer-guitarist Taylor Momsen, The Pretty Reckless packed the house at the Mayan, Tuesday, Dec. 6, for a “reckless” set of in your face rock. The New York-based band has been a mainstay in the alt-rock arena since 2009, and with three albums under their belt, they’ve won lots of fans. Momsen along with guitarist Ben Phillips wrote the songs on Who You Selling For, which is said to be a collection of gritty soul and blues rock set to dark lyrics. Momsen, Gossip Girl star, is considered by some as one of the best live female vocalists. She certainly holds her own in the conventional rocker chick genre.
Taking the stage on Tuesday night, Momsen was dressed in a long black leather coat and boots; her long blonde hair cascading down her face. For the first few songs her hair covered her face completely and only for a moment did she toss it to reveal some of her features. Both alluring and mesmerizing Momsen is indeed the focal point on stage connecting with the audience and stirring the chemistry.
The nearly 90-minute set showed a range for The Pretty Reckless covering the gamut from heavy rock to grunge. The audience seemed to take it all in; cheers, screams and fist pumping, they showed their love. The Pretty Reckless, in addition to Momsen and Phillips, are Mark Damon (bass) and Jamie Perkins (drums).
Opening for The Pretty Reckless was alt-rock band from Iowa the Holy White Hounds. Their music is catchy, edgy, and flagrantly raw, with sprinkles of Nirvana on the side. They can easily fill the grunge shoes for this century and are definitely a band to watch out for. These guys are untapped energy waiting to explode and there’s nothing tricky or mundane about them. They are fronted by Brenton Dean (vocals, guitar), Ambrose Lupercal (bass), James Manson (lead guitar) and Seth Luloff (drums).
