Sylosis - Monolith, album artworkMonolith (Nuclear Blast) is the third studio album for the guys from Reading, England.  On this album have really come into their own and found a style and sound that is unique, but at the same time is built on a strong foundation of thrash metal.  The guys are not afraid to mix in atmospheric elements, big doom riffs and acoustic guitars. The album has been praised by number of people.

Little known secret: METALLICA’s …And Justice For All and DEATH’s Symbolic record had a baby. It was tossed into a junkyard and forgotten about.  It ate metal and drank gasoline until it broke free and began to kill.  defines modern speed metal. ” – Chris Adler (LAMB OF GOD)

That’s a big promise to fulfill and delivers.  Every once in a while when listening to Monolith you get a feeling that you have heard the song before.  A riff or progression reminds you of something, but it’s hard to put your finger on exactly what it was.  And then the moment is gone, the song has taken a turn you didn’t expect.  The arrangements are ambitious, big and airy.  Feels funny to say that this piece of thrash metal is not in a hurry, but that’s how the album feels like.  The songs are thought through and you are not numbed by monotonous grinding.  There are mellow sections peppered within the songs almost as to give you time to breathe amongst the brutality.

The story behind the songs is loosely based on the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice.  The dark lyrics emphasize the mood of the album.  The lyrics revolve around fear, disappointment and helplessness — how hard it is to realize that you are not as virtuous as you thought.

It’s quite far-fetched but it’s about this guy who loses his wife and tries to bring her back from underworld.” – Josh Middleton.

The album has very high production value.  It was recorded at legendary Monnow Valley Studios in Monmouth, Wales.  The same studio has been used by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Rush and others.  Romesh Dodangoda produced the album and it was mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Orebro, Sweden.

Sylosis is Josh Middleton (lead vocals, lead guitar), Alex Bailey (rhythm guitar), Rob Callard (drums) and Carl Parnell (bass)
