Third Annual BOWL FOR RONNIE – Pinz Bowling

When legendary rock singer Ronnie James Dio lost his life to gastric cancer in 2010, his widow, Wendy Dio, organized a charity in his name, The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, dedicated to support research and education that furthers early detection, prevention and treatment of prostate, colon and stomach cancers. The Bowl for Ronnie is one of the annual events where friends and fans of Ronnie come together to help raise money for the charity all while having a great time.  As in past years, the Bowl for Ronnie was held at the Pinz Bowling Center in Studio City, where everyone was treated to a star-studded red carpet, pizza party, raffle, and, of course, bowling.

The event started with a rock-star-studded red carpet.  Well-known musicians, actors, and radio and TV personalities posed for the media before heading into the bowling alley where they mingled, snapped selfies and enjoyed a pizza party. Some of the red-carpet attendees included: Steven Adler (Guns ‘n Roses), Phil Demmel (Machine Head), Ahmet & Diva Zappa, Bob Kulick (KISS, Grammy-winning producer), Jimmy DeAnda (BulletBoys, Lynch Mob), Sebastian Bach, Gary Moore and Frank Kramer (KLOS), Calico Cooper (daughter of Alice Cooper, Beasto Blanco), Mick Sweda (BulletBoys), Doug Aldrich (DIO, Whitesnake), Marty O’Brien (Lita Ford), Joey Vera (Armored Saint), Ann Boleyn (Hellion), Jimmy Burkhard (Billy Idol), Christine Devine (Fox 11 News), Sean McNab (Lynch Mob), members of Dio Disciples, Bjorn Englen, Simon Wright, Scott Warren and Joe Retta, and Chas West (Bonham).

After the red carpet, players and onlookers convened at the lanes as Wendy Dio presented a check to Dr. Wong’s saliva screening, a test that will make cancer screenings a simple process. Afterwards it was “let the games begin” as the teams gathered to bowl. Some of the players who did not make the red carpet but participated in the bowling event included Tom Morello (Prophets of Rage), Mikkey Dee (Motorhead, Scorpions), and Brian Tichy (Whitesnake, The Dead Daisies).

The winning team this year was headed by Marc Ferrari (Keel), Jeff Scott Soto (Sons of Apollo), Fred Coury (Cinderella), Rock Feinstein, Tami Lester and Mark Abbastista, the Round Hill Publishing sponsored team. The second place team included Calico Cooper and Chris Latham (Beasto Blanco), Phil Demmel (Machine Head), Bob Kulick, Roy Z, and Chris Hager (Rough Cutt). Coming in third this year was Eddie Trunk’s (That Metal Show) team consisting of Tom Morello, Doug Aldrich, Brent Woods, Sebastian Bach, and auction winner Dan Hayes. In a tweet Eddie Trunk blamed their defeat on the alcohol. On the corporate teams, Rhino Entertainment came in first, Zappa Entertainment second and Metal Blade Records third.

According to Wendy Dio the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund will expand In 2018 with Rock Feinstein (Ronnie’s cousin) heading up the New York division, and with $100,000 in donations to various project over the years, the expansion is sure to see more money to help the advancement of early detection and treatment.
