On a blustery cold day in Germany, Sven Spacebrain of TORPEDOHEAD was ready to rock and roll their story! Torpedohead fuses Sven Spacebrain (vocals, guitar), Hardy Wildheart (bass, vocals), and Zasch Zasch (Drums) all from Hessen, mid Germany. Growing up with parents who played a lot of 60’s and 70’s music, became a major influence to all members of the group. Bands such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones were who they grew up listening to, courtesy of parents appreciating music by some of the greatest names in rock and roll. In the 80’s and 90’s they evolved into listening to Mötley Crüe, Nirvana and the Wildhearts. “We each had our own share of metal and punk rock a bit later on,” Said Spacebrain. “That’s what we mix into our own sound and we transform it into something unique.” Torpedohead definitely have a twist on their music as being in Germany gave them the opportunity to delve into several different genres to create their sound. “Germany is ranked as the third largest music market in the world,” enthused Spacebrain. “You can imagine, but in the end it all depends on your own taste and what you like and are out for.”
Forming a trio whose sound will take you to your favorite rock stadium, the guys mix in some pop-punk flavors to complete their sound. Spacebrain and Wildheart played together in a previous group that disbanded, thus TORPEDOHEAD arose in 2008. “ We were kind of like the Rolling Stones with Exile on Mainstreet, minus the ocean and the villa, as our first record was recorded in a small cottage in the woods.” Explained Spacebrain. “We used the entire house as a studio. We recorded it all ourselves, but for the mixing we moved it to a studio. Our first album was written and recorded before we ever played a live gig. For us we didn’t focus on making a record to please the press or the audience, it was all about having a blast and making music that we love.”
Still being experimental and searching for a specific sound, they continued on writing and working on the set list and the ‘specific sound’ they were looking for. “In the end it fit quite well and I still like to revisit the album a lot.” They hit the stage touring non-stop in Germany and other European countries, supporting several international rockers as the legendary New York Dolls, Peter Pan Speedrock, Nashville Pussy, Prima Donna and Dan Baird of Georgia Satellites, among several others. 2009 brought their debut album Lovesick Avenue, which is an album of masterful rock riffs. Having a pile of newly written songs by 2010, they decided to work with producer Siggi Bemm.
They set recording in Bemm’s infamous Woodhouse Studios in Hagen, Germany. Bemm is known for his ‘huge rock sound” and has worked with artists such as Kreator, Dave Lombardo and Lacuna Coil as well as several famous German pop-rock artists. The five track EP titled, Let’s Go For A Ride, was released on November 12, 2010 and featured Brave New World, Cadillac Beach, Black Rain, Moonshine Highway and Paintrain. Zasch joined just is time for this album. Playing well over 100 shows across Europe, the camaraderie between the three was a perfect fit and they were a band not to be missed. This was evident with the release of the album, along with a video/single for Cadillac Beach, which caused a massive explosion of great reviews and left fans screaming for more.
