Holiday Mountain’s “Motion Sickness” Video (Wall Street Journal Premiere)

Colorful psych-dub trio Holiday Mountain have premiered the “first video that will make you trip for free” for their new song, “Motion Sickness,” today on The Wall Street Journal‘s Speakeasy. Watch the video, which utilizes an optical illusion technique, motion aftereffect, to bring the viewer on a hallucinatory adventure, here:

On the meaning behind “Motion Sickness” front-woman Laura Patiño explains, “The song is about being torn between desiring something because you authentically want it for yourself, or do you want it because the society around you has given you a reason to think that it means you’ve accomplished something?” This echoes the underlying theme of the band’s upcoming album, “You Be You,” which Patiño explains is about “Being proud of your weirdness.” She continues, “I think lots of people probably feel weird in their own ways and we hope to create an environment that makes people feel a connection.”
The band is currently gearing up for the final show of their month-long residency at NYC’s Pianos tomorrow night, Wednesday November 26th. The band has been joined by numerous acts including Evolfo, Close Talker, The Dead South, Sit Kitty Sit throughout the month, bringing a welcomed mid-week dance party to the city’s Lower East Side. Formed in 2011, Holiday Mountain is Laura Patiño (keyboard, vocals), Bradley Will (synth, bass, vocals), and Zander Kagle (drums). The group met while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, where they were brought together by a common desire to push musical boundaries. With influences ranging from Billie Holliday and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs to M.I.A., Little Dragon and Major Lazer, Holiday Mountain skillfully mixes unconventional melodies with danceable grooves and beats that are only enhanced by Patino’s wild yet ethereal vocals.
Patiño best encompassed the energy that radiates from Holiday Mountain when, in a packed club at SXSW 2014, she exclaimed, “It’s okay to be who you are, dance hard even when everyone is looking at you, and fuck the haters.”
Holiday Mountain impressively combines influences from world, dance and pop music to create a virally catchy – and completely unique — sound on their upcoming LP, “You Be You.”
