MyLifewithDeth-cvr-lrg’s history reads like a how‑to manual of excess of all kinds. If you’re looking for revelations, they’re here, including the drug habits which brought the band members to their knees – but My Life with Deth {Howard Books/Simon & Schuster / October 29, 2013 / ISBN: 9781451699883} is far more than just another memoir of debauchery.  After bassist and co-founder of the group, David Ellefson beat his addictions and embarked on a path of sobriety and faith in the 1990s, he entered a new arena of Christian thought that continues to inform his work two decades later.

In My Life with Deth, Ellefson reveals the full, eye-opening details of life in one of the world’s biggest heavy metal bands, with a recurring theme being the struggle between his addiction to heroin, his love of aggressive, extreme metal and his Christian faith. The reader is taken on a gripping journey from his Lutheran upbringing as a Minnesota farm boy, through the culture shock he experienced when he arrived in Los Angeles and entered the record industry, to his victory over addiction and his foundation of Mega Life Ministries, which reaches hundreds of churchgoers every week.

The trials and tribulations of Ellefson’s life in and out of are covered in intimate detail, with the book’s climactic and reflective ending culminating with the band’s return to the very top of the metal world in 2011. Along the way, exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names in American music are detailed, including Dave Mustaine, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Alice Cooper, and many others.

There are lessons for every reader here, whether religious or non‑religious and regardless of their status as drug abuser, user, or non‑user.
