Instead of releasing an original full-length album, AWOLNATION instead took their 2011 chart topping first full-length album release Megalithic Symphony and spruced it up a bit. On November 19, 2013 the band released a newly expanded 2-CD limited edition deluxe version.
The members of AWOLNATION are purportedly currently in the studio working on their new full length album set to release sometime in 2014. So we suppose they thought releasing an expanded version of their first album would be a way to say, “hey we’re still here, stay interested,” until they can get the new material out.
It often feels like a marketing ploy when artists forgo a full release and instead re-release their old material. It sometimes can seem like a way to make money instead of putting in the work to create new. We don’t really need another Megalithic Symphony album. Just give us the new stuff. We’ll wait, especially if we like you enough, which many people do considering Megalithic Symphony stayed on the Billboard 200 for 119 weeks and on the Heatseekers Albums Chart for 45 weeks, hitting #1 seven times in 2012.
The expanded version includes 32 tracks. The original studio album is on disc one. Disc two has the latest single THISKIDSNOTALRIGHT, Some Kind of Joke and Everybody’s Got A Secret. The second disc also contains b-sides of I’ve Been Dreaming and MF, and some live tracks and remixes. The full boxed set also comes with an official AWOLNATION jacket patch and a limited edition surf wax comb.
AWOLNATION has proven to be an original, unique, impressive genre mixing, alternative rock-electronica band. Fans are surely anxiously awaiting the next album release. While Megalithic Symphony Limited Edition Deluxe contains much of the older material, it also offers a glimpse at the new material and various renditions of some of their most popular songs. AWOLNATION fans may geek out over the bundled kit, and it’s a good Christmas gift if you haven’t quite finished your shopping.
