Vocalist Don Dokken just released a new solo album entitled Solitary distributed on Deadline Music, a division of Cleopatra Records, Inc. Although not exactly brand new, the reissued album was sold for a limited time at select Dokken acoustic gigs and later released in 2014 on digital, this new version contains the same songs plus three bonus tracks, including a cover version of Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On.

The voice behind multi-platinum selling albums and heavy metal classics Breaking the Chains and Dream Warriors, Solitary is a stripped-down collection of acoustic originals and covers, lush with ballads, easy listening rock that you can enjoy with a glass of wine by the fire. Yes, that’s right, and the songs are arranged, recorded, and played by a group of high-profile musicians including bassist Tony Franklin (The Firm/Whitesnake) and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa/Sting).

With not much detail or timeline about the origin, Solitary feels like a labor of love, a conglomeration of songs written over the decades along with covers that are very personal to Dokken. Songs like Venice and Sarah convey youthful observations of life; a naivety and look to the future reflected in the ocean or the uneasiness of a new or lost love. And then there’s that oddly out of place cover of Dion’s My Heart Will Go On, the haunting melody from Titanic written by Oscar-winning composer James Horner, reconceived and arranged into lilting harmonic ballad homage. Additionally, folk-inspired songs like In the Meadow and an almost 70s yacht rock I’ll Never Forget and Ship of Fools are one of many unforgettable tracks on the album.

Solitary is not just an addendum to Dokken’s catalog or a must-have for collectors, it’s a soft-subtle gem with a peek into Dokken’s sensibilities as an artist that leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling.
