Wendy Dio established the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund to raise awareness and educate the public about lifesaving cancer screenings and detection. Wendy knows far too well how a screening could save a life, as her own husband, legendary rock vocalist, Ronnie James Dio, died in 2010 from gastric cancer at the age of 67. He had not been tested for stomach or colorectal cancer in at least 10 years. The American Cancer Foundation suggests a colonoscopy every 10 years starting at age 50 for both men and women and sometimes more if there’s a history of colon cancer.
As part of the ongoing fundraising efforts the second annual Bowl 4 Ronnie took place Nov. 4 at Pinz Bowling Center in Studio City. The event featured an evening of fun, food, entertainment and bowling with rock stars and celebrities competing for trophies. In addition, there was a live auction of collectibles including autographed bowling pins, custom bowling ball, a Ride 4 Ronnie leather vest, a guitar donated by Chris Broderick, and a variety of gift baskets.
The evening started off with a red carpet entrance. Media were on hand to take pictures and interview the rockers and celebrities. Some of the notables who made their way to the step and repeat included John 5, Rudy and Robert Sarzo, Eddie Trunk, Chris Broderick, Fox News anchor Christine Devine and Sean McNabb, and Tom Morello to name a few. Eddie Trunk and John 5 posed together and were joined by Tom Morello, who brought his own bowling ball to the event. At the end Wendy Dio, and whoever else wanted to jump it got into the party spirit for a group photo.
After the red carpet, attendees got a chance to bowl a few frames while eating pizza. Tickets were priced as follows: Individual Spectator – $50.00, Individual Bowler – $75.00 – Team/Corporate Lane – $1995.00 (6 bowlers). Master of ceremonies Eddie Trunk lead the auction, the guitar donated by Chris Broderick went for $1700. Also auctioned were a leather jacket and other items including a custom bowling pin.
Wendy Dio presented a check in the amount of $25,000 to UC Regents for cancer research. Ronnie’s doctor, Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, was there to accept the donation, as well as participate in the bowling event himself.
For the second year in a row The Dream Team – Eddie Trunk, Jeff Scott Soto, John 5, Tim Ripper and David Rock Feinstein, were the champs scoring the highest scores of the evening. They won the trophy and maintain their title.
